san juan island public works operations center
San Juan County includes over 300 islands over 30 sq miles. The County maintains all public roads on the islands from maintenance bases on Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Island. Crews based on San Juan Island travel with equipment and materials to other islands for road maintenance in the summer.
Project Description
The Center was designed to accommodate Public Works Roads and Vehicle Maintenance operations. It was completed in March 2023. A single building provides high bay vehicle parking on one end of the building with high bay vehicle maintenance on the other. Between the two are offices and crew facilities with normal ceiling height requirements. The roof was sloped to the southwest to accommodate 13,000 sf of solar array. The sloped roof provided enough height over the center offices to allow the addition of a second floor and second floor mezzanine. The County has moved engineering and other city departments into this bonus space.
The facility also provides vehicle fueling and wash off used by other county vehicles. Wash off water is cleaned and recycled. Storm water is sent to replenish adjacent wetlands.
